Joint Media Statement of the Fourth AEM-UK Consultation

Fourth AEM-UK Consultation Convened in Singapore

Singapore – 10 June 2023

The Fourth Asia-Europe Meeting (AEM)-United Kingdom (UK) Consultation was held in Singapore on 9 June 2023. The Consultation was co-chaired by H.E. Dato’ Sri Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, and the Rt Hon James Cleverly MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the UK.

The Consultation was attended by senior officials from the 27 EU Member States, the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the UK. The Consultation provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on a wide range of regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Indo-Pacific, climate change, energy security, and economic cooperation.

On the war in Ukraine, both sides strongly condemned Russia's aggression and called for an immediate end to the conflict. They expressed their full support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and pledged to continue providing political, financial, and humanitarian assistance.

On the situation in the Indo-Pacific, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based order in the region. They welcomed the growing cooperation between ASEAN and the EU, and pledged to continue working together to promote regional stability and prosperity.

On climate change, both sides recognized the urgency of addressing this global challenge. They welcomed the outcomes of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and pledged to work together to implement the Paris Agreement.

On energy security, both sides recognized the importance of diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. They discussed the potential for cooperation in the field of renewable energy, and pledged to work together to promote energy security and sustainability.

On economic cooperation, both sides welcomed the growing trade and investment flows between Asia and Europe. They pledged to continue working together to promote open and fair trade, and to address global economic challenges.

The Consultation was held in a constructive and cooperative atmosphere. Both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening the AEM-UK dialogue and cooperation in the years to come.
